555 Gallery, Established in Ann Arbor in 2002 by Jacob M. Martinez, Carl W. Goines and Andres Garces. Moved to Ypsilanti in 2003 when Ann Arbor location was sold to the YMCA. Relocated to Detroit in August 2004 with more than 700 people attending the opening exhibition on October 1. Staff and volunteers deconstructed interiors of both former locations and hauled building materials in four 25 foot trucks to Detroit location; including iron beams, 4’x8’ sheets of plywood, plastic and drywall, insulation, furniture, heating units, large scale sculptures, and a 12 foot, curved gallery wall. Currently: In the process of sculpting and renovating 13,000 sq. ft. complex for 15 working art studios, a wood shop, metal shop, ceramics studio and exhibition space. Provide space for community-based arts and arts education projects and activities, including classes and workshops, as well an Artist Residency Program for emerging and professional artists.
